Have Questions?

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about our application process, and what positions we offer. If your question is not listed below, you can always email us at staff@campthurman.org!

Before You Apply

The difference between the three positions is simply age. Our Counselors in Training (CIT’s) should have finished freshman year of high school by summer 2024. Assistant Counselors should have finished sophomore or junior year of high school by summer 2024. Counselors should be 18+ years old by June 3rd, 2024. This means that if you are brand new to Camp Thurman and 18+ years old when applying, you would still apply as a Counselor and not a CIT or Assistant.

While we offer many different areas to work, serving groups is the heart of our ministry. Our campers are incredible, and it is such a joy to get the opportunity to get to know 12 campers a week. It is encouraged that you mark at least 2 areas you would be interested in working, but you may not get your favorite spots each week. We ask that all potential staff members have a servant-hearted attitude and go where needed to make camp run smoothly. Some other opportunities besides being with a group for a week include Crafts, Snacks/Merchandise, Media, First Aid, Office, Ropes, Lifeguards.

Nope! We hire by week (Monday-Friday) for all 10 sessions. Although, you must be able to attend training week which is May 27th-31st, 2024.

You provide us with the weeks you are available for in full (Monday-Friday 7:30 am- 5:00pm each day). We let you know what you are scheduled for based on your availability. If you are an Assistant or Counselor, we also have a second option (Night Camp with junior high kids) available some weeks from 1:00pm-10:30pm.

Yes it is! As a non-profit, ministry-minded organization, Camp Thurman is proud to offer compensation rates that are competitive for the camp industry. For each week worked, summer staff are compensated a weekly rate, and the amount is based on their position. The weekly salary rates are as follows: CITs – $125, Assistants – $200, Counselors – $400. If you are 18+ and have a bachelor’s degree or higher, the weekly rate is $450.

About Our Application Process

If you are a new staff member to Camp Thurman, you will receive an email with a link to sign up for an in-person interview. Those interviews will start in January of 2024. If you are a returning staff member, you will receive an email either stating that we will send you your hiring status in February or that we need to see you for an interview. We will start the official hiring process in February of 2024.

We will start sending out emails to those that have been hired on February 1st, 2024.

You MUST be able to attend training week, especially if you are a new staff member. We do understand that many graduations take place over the course of our training week. We will absolutely work with anyone who has that previous commitment. If you have another conflict, you must let the Staffing Coordinator know what it is and when. Our training week is very important as it is the only time we have all staff on camp property together. We have many important topics being discussed each day that you need to go through to be successful out here.

2 references MUST be provided by someone (besides a family member) who can speak to your character, spiritual walk, or potential job performance. Youth Pastors, Pastors, Mentors, Bible Study Leaders, Coaches, Teachers, Advisors, and previous employers all make excellent references. One reference MUST be able to speak to your spiritual maturity.

Misc.

Yeah you do! This is the best part of the application process. We do have a list of previously used camp names that you will find when it is time to pick your camp name. Be creative, have fun with it, but make sure it is something you would be okay with if you were to introduce yourself to a camper parent.
